DONT LET TIME RUN OUT!

DOT physicals are getting harder to get and more strict in their guidelines. It often takes drivers a lot of money and time to get their DOT certifications. Many of the drivers we do DOT exam physicals for are actually no longer driving. They just want to keep the certification that it took so long to get.

Don’t let your DOT certification go bad by not keeping your DOT physical certification up to date. It you let your physical get out of date you will lose your certification and you will no longer be able to drive commercially. Its a small price to pay for a physical to keep your DOT certification.

Ready for a little information to help you with your NRCME DOT certified physical exam?

Here are some of the most common question I get when performing DOT physicals. Click on the Question to see the answer.

That depends. Most of my DOT physicals are INTERstate. In fact I would estimate that over 95% of all the physicals are interstate physicals. What the difference between the two is basically where you are allowed to drive. With an interstate physical or certification you are allowed to drive anywhere. Meaning you can cross state border, transport goods from another state or country, essentially travel anywhere you need to. On the other hand you have INTRAstate driving. With intrastate driving you are only allowed to drive WITHIN california. You cannot cross state borders and you are not allowed to transport goods from another country or state. As far as I am aware (and I am not personally DOT certified) there is not a difference in the price or certification process for the intrastate vs. interstate. In my personal opinion I am not sure why someone would pick intrastate over interstate just for the simple fact that it limits you in where you can drive. In short, pick interstate unless you have some other reason not to.
Yes. Most DOT physicals that we do are done about every two years. Most people don’t get their eyes checked during this period unless they already have glasses. As such, your vision may change a lot over those two years. Always bring any glasses you wear at any time. I might save you a trip and some time to have them just in case.
Most DOT certificates will be good for 2 years. The next most common amount of time is one year. The conditions that usually dictate someone only being certified for a year is when someone is either diabetic or has high blood pressure. Even if the blood pressure is under control, the fact that you are on blood pressure meds dictates that is only be one year. And don’t think about lying. They can check your medical records and if you are found out you most likely will lose your license. Don’t do it.
Yes, most of the time. If you are on any diabetic medications that are not INJECTABLE insulin, you MAY be certified. If you are on insulin that has to be injected you CANNOT be certified. NO ifs, ands, or buts. period. And its not up the the doctor or DMV personnel to decide. This is a FMSCA federal regulation.
Most likely, no. Prior to 2015 any Physician in the state of California could give a driver their DOT certification. This is no longer the case. Their were too many incidents of drivers getting into car accidents or injuries simply because the doctors were not familiar with the regulations and were certifying doctors to drive when they should simply not have been certified. Any Doctor that says they can perform DOT testing must be certified by the NRCME (National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners) and be listed on their website. NO EXCEPTIONS!
Yes and no. While you technically don’t have to do anything different, nor should you really have to, I do give some generally guidelines that usually make for a quicker and easier DOT exam for all both of us.
1) make sure if you take medications that you are up to date on them and have taken them consistently for the last 2 days.
2) If you were any type of glasses pleas make sure to bring them.
3) Eat healthy no longer than 3-4 hours before your physical.
4) Try to avoid or drink less coffee than normal. Please no Red Bulls or anything prior - It raises blood pressure.
5) If you have an SPE make sure you bring the paperwork with you.
